Chapter Fifteen
Shay knocked on the open door of the office of his boss, Director Quinn, and she beckoned him in.
“I wanted to talk to you about my sleep study, ma’am,” he said, taking a seat and accepting the tea she offered him.
“I got your message that you’ve finished analyzing the results.”
“Yes. There’s…something I need to disclose.” He’d been thinking about this since he and Jacob had come back from their short break almost two weeks ago. He wanted to be with Jacob long term, and he believed Jacob wanted the same thing. It was difficult to get him to admit it, but when a man said “I love you,” he must intend to stick around. The first step to that would be getting this all into the open. Shay had decided the day before and made an appointment to see Director Quinn as soon as possible.
“It’s about myself and Jacob Garcia,” he said. “I’m involved with him. We’re in a relationship.”
Her eyebrows shot up, and she put her cup down a little forcefully, making it rattle. “That’s almost the last thing I expected you to say. When did this start?”
“Not until after the lab work was done. We were attracted to each other before that, but since Jacob didn’t have much choice about participating in the study, I felt it was unethical to pursue a relationship with him then.”
She nodded. “Yes, it would have been. But you started seeing him after that? While you were analyzing the data from the study?”
“That’s why I wanted to disclose it. So you can organize a peer check of my results before I write the paper. In case of any unintentional bias in my analysis. I don’t think I’ve allowed that to happen, but I can’t be sure. My judgment may be compromised.”
“Don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re only human.” She frowned. “Weren’t you seeing Dr. Eriksson?”
She knew about him and Mike? “I was.” They had been to institute social events together, but he hadn’t expected the senior staff would take much notice of whom their juniors were sleeping with. He supposed they were only human—and curious—too. “We broke up.”
“Right.” She wrote a note on her terminal. “I’ll organize the peer check. I’m sure it will be fine. You’ve always been scrupulous in your methods.” She sat back in her chair, studying him. “You’ve been working hard on this project, and it shows. You look as if you haven’t seen daylight in a while.”
That was an exaggeration. But he did look a little peaked, he knew, his skin having a grayish cast. The break in the mountains had helped, but the effect had soon worn off.
“You should take a vacation.” She smiled. “Perhaps with Mr. Garcia. Go someplace sunny and relax for two weeks. Three if you want.”
“I did take some vacation time a couple of weeks ago.”
“A few days,” she said dismissively. “You need a real break. I’ll authorize it at once. You go and get some sunshine, and by the time you come back, the results will be checked and signed off, and you can start work on your paper.
